What the Constitution Says About Religion
The Constitution speaks about religion in two places, and both are designed to protect freedom, not control belief.
1. Article VI — No Religious Tests
The Constitution says no one can be required to follow any religion to hold public office. This means the government cannot demand a person be Christian, Jewish, Muslim, atheist, or anything else to serve.
2. First Amendment — Two Big Protections
The First Amendment contains two clauses:
Establishment Clause “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” This means the government cannot create an official religion, cannot favor one religion over another, and cannot force religious participation.
Free Exercise Clause “…or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” This means you are free to believe, worship, or not worship as you choose, as long as you follow neutral laws that apply to everyone.
Together, these two clauses form the foundation of religious liberty in the United States.
